Located on the outskirts of Perth and not more than a few hours drive are the wineries and vineyards of the Greater Perth area. You will find some of the oldest vineyards in Western Australia along the Swan River or hire a car and day trip to the Peel Wine Region and Perth Hill Wine Region. The Peel wine region is an ideal destination for a day trip due to its close proximity to Perth and its several excellent cellar doors. Vineyards were first established in the area in the 1930s and since then they have grown steadily to produce fine examples including Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Merlot, Semillon, Shiraz and Verdelho.

Perth Hills is a large wine region located just outside the city of Perth. The regions landscape is so diverse with its hills and valleys that microclimates are born and thus the region can produce a wide range of wines. The region has five major valleys Mundaring in the centre, Bickley and Carmel to the south and Bindoon and Chittering in the north. The Avon, Helena and Swan flow through the region.

The area is full of passionate boutique winemakers specialising in a range of wine varieties including Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Grenache, Merlot, Muscat, Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz and Viognier. The Shiraz and Viognier have emerged as the key wines of the region.

The region has seen many new developments with the emergence of cellar doors and winery restaurants and cafes. The Perth Hills is a fantastic tourist destination for those who enjoy the countryside, galleries, craft shops, farmers markets, fruit stalls and fine wine and dining.

Swan Valley Wine Region

The Swan District wine region is a large area north of Perth. The flat plains of the region produce fine wines including Chenin Blanc and Verdelho. The Rose of the region is a perfect accompaniment to a summer's day. The district extends along the coast just south of Guilderton and North West to Wannamal. Most wineries are found around the townships of Gingin and Yanchep. There is also a large scattering of wineries and vineyards along the Avon River which is now called the Swan Valley sub-region.

Swan Valley Sub-Region

The Swan Valley is the oldest wine region in Western Australia. Vines were planted in the 1800s with production steadily growing until the 1970s when table wine popularity shot through the roof. It is home to Houghtons Winery where famous winemaker Jack Mann produced fifty vintages. Mann pioneered white table wines, his most famous being Houghton's White Burgundy. He influenced generations of winemakers which is seen in modern winemaking practices today.

The Swan Valley is 20 minutes from Perth and is a perfect place for day trippers. Visitors can enjoy the beautiful wineries dotted beside the meandering Swan River.
